This is from the Wall Street Journal today. I’ve been thinking about how we are living in a post-democratic oligarchy. An oligarchy that masquerades, and badly, at giving ordinary folk a say in how we’re governed. In my darkest hours, I think, too, that we’re mired in a smash-and-grab economy where anyone outside of a small core of uber rich white people are subject to metaphorical and actual search and seizure at any time.
I don’t have any idea how to push back against this monolith.
The Extremely Rich are Getting Richer
and $ has become
a set of
01010101010s
floating
in luxurious ether,
a dream
(for the few)
winging just
within reach,
a nightmare
(for most) --
Sisyphus's rock
teetering on the edge
of a royal Nothing.
Just one push
and we plummet
with it
into oblivion.
Just one more
oligarch's signature
and the mountain
of expensive air
we've collected
evaporates
as fast as the
polar ice caps.
